The First Day is the first story in The First Ever After Series by Keelan Powell. The city of Perth is isolated from the rest of the world by what appears to be a scientific anomaly. Twelve-year-old Enivwenaye is on a plane with her parents when it crashes. She and the premier are the only survivors. Alexander lives in an abusive household and is distressed when his father drives him to a preacher's house in the middle of the night. Cecilia, or "Circe", and Leah, her four-year-old sister, run from their house when Circe is injured. They're followed by a being only Circe can see and hear. At the South Pole, Scott Murdo keeps a journal as reports of something apocalyptic flood their communications. Finn and Imai are scientists who seem to be at the center of the events and watch as the world drastically changes.

Keelan Powell describes a scientific event that will knock you off your feet. Powell makes the science understandable while describing chronions and a time wave. Readers will be invested in Enivwenaye, Circe, Leah, and Alexander as they navigate the events immediately after they transpire. The many perspectives will allow readers to absorb the enormity of the situation and make them wonder about the reason the children are so important to the officials in Perth. From the moment of the strange occurrence, the author moves quickly through the effects as these relate to the main characters. This is a great start to a series that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Readers who enjoy apocalyptic stories with science fiction and a mostly young adult focus will like The First Day.
